The Uppsala Association of International Affairs, in collaboration with Nüwa, Lawbase and GABS, proudly presents Thomas Cellucci, PhD, MBA and Executive Vice President of ICS-NETT, as a lecturer. An expert in technology communication, Mr Cellucci has served as Chief Commercialization Officer under, among others, Barack Obama. His role has been to expand the role of public-private partnerships within government and to increase opportunities for cooperative research and development activities in support of the Department of Homeland Security. On Thursday, January 26, he will lecture on the topic of “Breaking Down the Silos of Government”.
Hörsal 3, Ekonomikum

17.15, Thursday, January 26

Admission costs 30 kr. Members of UF get in for free. A UF membership can be paid in connection to the lecture. It costs 100 kr, includes a subscription to our magazine Uttryck and is valid for twelve months.

Utlysning: Fotografer

UF-medlemmar kommer in gratis.

Ticket Release: Nobel Peace Prize Panel Discussion

The Uppsala Association of International Affairs, in cooperation with Uppsala University, proudly presents two of the Nobel Peace Prize Laureates of 2011, Leymah Gbowee and Tawakel Karman. They will hold a Nobel Peace Prize panel discussion in the University Aula on December 13, 3pm (15.00).

UF Uppsala has tickets that will guarantee the best seats in the aula. We will distribute them to our members at the “Lokstallarna” (outside the lecture halls) in Ekonomikum between December 7 and December 9, 10am-3pm (10-15). Tickets are free, but UF membership is required. However, signing up for one can be done in connection to the ticket distribution. A membership costs 100 SEK and is valid for twelve months. We only accept cash; no credit card payments are possible. Considering that demand for tickets will most likely be very high, we encourage you to get your ticket as soon as possible. In order to have a seat secured, a ticket is necessary.

Leymah Gbowee is a Liberian peace activist responsible for leading a woman’s peace movement that brought an end to the Second Liberian Civil War in 2003. Tawakel Karman is a journalist and politician from Yemen, who became the public face of the 2011 Yemeni uprising against the Yemeni government. They were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize together with Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, President of Liberia, “for their non-violent struggle for the safety of women and for women’s rights to full participation in peace-building work.”

Debate Club: “”This House Believes That India, Not China, Will Dominate the 21st Century”

The Debate Club is the perfect forum for the Uppsala student who has a keen interest in current events, politics & foreign affairs. Every Wednesday night we hold a British Parliamentary-style debate at the library of Värmlands Nation. Whether as an engaged debater, curious amateur or passive listener – you are all most welcome!

“Let China sleep, for when she awakes she will shake the world.”

These words, once uttered by Napoleon, have never seemed to have more meaning than today. It seems to be the common knowledge to be reckoned with in the west right now – the ‘fact’ that China will emerge as the leading superpower in the 21st Century. On the path to overtake the US in economical terms in 2016 many leading commentators have cited the size of industry and population intertwined with a stable and ‘pragmatic’ authoritarian system for China’s undisputed rise to the top.

On the other hand a quite different giant is rising on the other side of the Himalayas. The worlds largest democratic nation – and an English-speaking secular republic at that which had a GDP growth of 9,7% last year (almost neck in neck with Chinas 10,3%, according to the world bank). A country mired in corruption and state inefficiency some would put forward but also a country not facing an imploding population pyramid. But above all a democracy, ensuring reform and a secure way of letting of steam – popular elections.

Once again the Earth will shake at the behest of Asian Behemoths. But who will come out on top?

The motion before the Debate Club next Wednesday will thus be:

“This House Belives That India, Not China, Will Dominate the 21st Century.”

As usual every one who has a nation-ID is more than welcome to join us. Rules and debating procedures will be explained beforehand.

Welcome to the library in Värmlands Nation!

Chairman of the Debate Club
