Lecture: Izzeldin Abuelaish, Author of “I Shall Not Hate”

Izzeldin Abuelaish was the first Palestinian doctor to receive a staff position at an Israeli hospital. When he lost three daughters in the Gaza War of 2009, he decided not to respond with hate and fury. Instead, he chose to speak out in public about the need for peaceful coexistence and dialogue.

Dr Abuelaish has written a book based on his experiences, called “I Shall Not Hate”, which has been translated to several languages. A Swedish translation will be published this fall. He was also a nominee for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2009. In February, he will visit Sweden, and the Uppsala Association of International Affairs, in collaboration with Daughters for Life and Peace in the Present, is proud to present him as a lecturer during this visit.

Admission costs 30 kr. Members of UF get in for free. A UF membership can be paid in connection to the lecture. It costs 100 kr, includes a subscription to our magazine Uttryck and is valid for twelve months.

Föredrag: Blir 6000 språk 500?

- Om globalisering, språklig mångfald och svensk språkpolitik

I dagens Sverige talas ungefär 150 olika språk, och vi förväntas tala minst tre per person. I världen finns ungefär 6000 olika språk. Mer än hälften av dessa talas av färre än 10 000 personer. Globaliseringen må motivera oss att lära oss fler språk än bara vårt modersmål, men samtidigt riskerar flera mindre språk att dö ut på sikt. På vilket sätt påverkar denna utveckling oss? Björn Melander, professor i svenska språket vid Uppsala universitet, kommer att räta ut frågetecknen på måndag den 20 februari.

The destination has been set to the region of Caucasus. This is the area between the Caspian Sea and the Black Sea that contains the Caucasian mountains reaching over 5000 meters above sea-level as well as the Transcaucasian lowlands. This remarkable region is home to a lot of wildlife such as Leopard, Brown bear and Bison.

The oldest archaeological findings dates to 4000 BC and the area have been a part of various empires over the last 5000 years. The religious, cultural and linguistic variation are huge and one may encounter a great variety of people and nature within just a 500 km radius.

The three (only counting the widely recognized) countries of Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan are framed by the borders of Russia, Turkey and Iran. Its a region that many of us know far to little about. There are a lot of disputed borders and areas in the region which we have been reminded of every now and then. The genocide of Armenians and other ethnic groups in the early 20th century, terror attacks in Russia in the name of liberating Chechnya, the 2008 war between Russia and Georgia are a few examples.

To get us started with understanding this region the Travel Group has invited Greg Simons, who is a senior researcher at the Uppsala Centre of Russian Studies and responsible for Eastern European Research projects at Crismart, to discuss some current issues. He’s a specialist on communication and Russian usage of media. Greg will be able to give us a pretty good idea of how to interpret the rhetorical language regarding the different issues in the Caucasus region.

What to bring to the ticket-release (mandatory to be able to get a ticket):

- Passport (NB! should be valid at least 6 months after the trip)

The payment for the trip should be made to the UF Uppsala PlusGiro-account on the 2nd of March at the latest.

Everybody who have received a ticket is responsible to get necessary VISA, vaccinations and insurance. The price for this will therefore come in addition to the payment made to UF.

Rules for queuing for tickets

Here are the rules for the ticket-queue:

One spot per queuing person. You may queue for someone else, but not for someone else plus yourself. The same person must stand in line the whole time.
You may not leave the queue to fetch something, only to go to the bathroom. If you’re gone for more than 15 minutes you lose your spot in the queue. You must queue at the designated place.
We will put up a list, where you write your name when you join the queue. The list is supposed to make the release of the tickets more orderly and to enable you to move around a bit while in the queue.

The UF is not a regular tour operator. This means that every traveler is completely responsible for his/her own security and health, and the payment rules and conditions are completely the hotel’s and airline’s own ones.

“Humour – A Serious Strategy for Nonviolent Social Change”

Humour has always been an instrument for social change and a way of protesting without protesting. For example, in the Soviet Union, jokes about the incompetence of its leaders were very popular among the common people. But how are power relations affected when dictators, multinational companies, police and politicians are challenged with irony, satire, exaggerations and absurdity? Why is it a strength for activists to pretend that a protest is not a protest?

Majken Jul Sørensen, Ph.D. student at the University of Wollongong, Australia, is a researcher on humour and social change. She has been involved in the peace movement for several years and is also active in the Swedish civil disobedience network Ofog. She will lecture on humour and nonviolent change on

On Tuesday, February 14, Thomas Schaller, Professor of Political Science at the University of Maryland, will give his thoughts on the Republican primaries as well as the candidates’ strategies for winning the elections. This lecture is held in collaboration with the American Embassy in Sweden.

Styrelsen i UF Uppsala söker ny aktivitetsansvarig för våren 2012

Nu har du chansen att vara med och driva Uppsalas roligaste förening!

Som aktivitetsansvarig sitter man med i föreningens styrelse som ledamot med främsta ansvar för föreningens aktiviteter och sociala evenemang (t.ex. filmvisningar, medlemsfester och studiebesök).

Ansökan

Det är valberedningen som tar emot ansökningar, och de kommer att ta ett antal allmänna kriterier i beaktande då de nominerar sin kandidat. Man behöver förstås inte uppfylla alla kriterier, men de ger ändå en indikation på egenskaper som är viktiga för en styrelseledamot. De allmänna kriterierna är:

Ansvarstagande

Intervju med Aktivitetsansvarig

Vad innebär posten?

The Activity Coordinator’s main duty is to lead the activity group. It
may be possible to work without an activity group, but it’s highly
unlikely that it would be as successful. As a leader, the Activity
Coordinator needs to be able to direct the operations of the activity
group while ensuring that its members have the possibility to work on
what they are interested in. This involves delegating responsibility
to others and making sure that activities are being planned
effectively and without too much work laying on one person. The AC has
to be both optimistic and realistic at the same time, being open to
all kinds of ideas but also knowing what needs to be done to plan a
successful activity.

Hur mycket tid tar styrelseposten i anspråk?

It depends on how ambitious you are. Just looking at board meetings,
kassaavnsvar, affischering, and activity group meetings, the post
requires 3-4 hours a week on average. It depends on how much is going
on and how well the task is delegated among people, but if you have an
activity every week it is more realistically around 8-10 hours a week.

Vad är roligast med posten?

Of course it depends on what you enjoy doing, but leading a group and
working with enthusiastic people has been the best part of being
Activity Coordinator. There were some weeks when I held 4-5 meetings
because it was effective and enjoyable to discuss different
activities. It is an excellent learning experience, and as Activity
Coordinator you have to be prepared to think critically in solving
problems and learn from past mistakes.

“Breaking down the Silos in Government to Create Cost Effectiveness and Efficiency”
The Uppsala Association of International Affairs, in collaboration with Nüwa, Lawbase and GABS, proudly presents Thomas Cellucci, PhD, MBA and Executive Vice President of ICS-NETT, as a lecturer. An expert in technology communication, Mr Cellucci has served as Chief Commercialization Officer under, among others, Barack Obama. His role has been to expand the role of public-private partnerships within government and to increase opportunities for cooperative research and development activities in support of the Department of Homeland Security. On Thursday, January 26, he will lecture on the topic of “Breaking Down the Silos of Government”.

Utrikespolitiska föreningen i Uppsala utlyser två fotoämbetspersoner att dokumentera föreningens verksamhet.

Som fotografer förväntas ni täcka UF:s föredrag (måndag och torsdagar varje vecka), samt i vissa fall föreningens övriga aktiviteter. Exempel bilder som tidigare fotoämbetspersoners tagit finns på flickr. Att vara ämbetsperson i UF innebär även att man hjälper till med föreningens fortlöpande verksamhet (affischering, programbladsutdelning, kassaansvar vid föredrag m.m).

I övrigt innebär posten en hög grad av självständighet. Tidigare erfarenhet av liknande uppdrag är meriterande, men inget krav. Det viktigaste är att du är intresserad av föreningens verksamhet! Egen kamera är ett krav.

De ryska spioner som placerades i Sverige under kalla kriget fick samtidigt en inblick i det svenska samhället. Deras röster hörs sällan idag, men ett undantag är Boris Grigorjev. Han är före detta KGB-överste och var stationerad i Sverige som spion 1977-1982, då han bland annat var på plats i Karlskrona under ubåtskrisen 1981. Idag har han lämnat den ryska underrättelsetjänsten och på senare år skrivit flera böcker om sina erfarenheter som spion.

Som svensktalande ryss med en bakgrund som spion har Boris Grigorjev erfarenhet av såväl Sverige som Ryssland, då som nu. Från UF Uppsalas sida är vi stolta över att kunna presentera honom som föreläsare på temat “Ryssland och Sverige i spionens fokus”. Hur har Ryssland utvecklats sedan Sovjets fall? Vilka problem och utmaningar står landet inför i framtiden? Hur stark är demokratin och de mänskliga rättigheternas ställning för tillfället? Och hur har de svensk-ryska relationerna förändrats under de senaste decennierna? kommer Boris Grigorjev att försöka bringa klarhet i detta.

Ticket Release: Nobel Peace Prize Panel Discussion

The Uppsala Association of International Affairs, in cooperation with Uppsala University, proudly presents two of the Nobel Peace Prize Laureates of 2011, Leymah Gbowee and Tawakel Karman. They will hold a Nobel Peace Prize panel discussion in the University Aula on December 13, 3pm (15.00).

UF Uppsala has tickets that will guarantee the best seats in the aula. We will distribute them to our members at the “Lokstallarna” (outside the lecture halls) in Ekonomikum between December 7 and December 9, 10am-3pm (10-15). Tickets are free, but UF membership is required. However, signing up for one can be done in connection to the ticket distribution. A membership costs 100 SEK and is valid for twelve months. We only accept cash; no credit card payments are possible. Considering that demand for tickets will most likely be very high, we encourage you to get your ticket as soon as possible. In order to have a seat secured, a ticket is necessary.

Leymah Gbowee is a Liberian peace activist responsible for leading a woman’s peace movement that brought an end to the Second Liberian Civil War in 2003. Tawakel Karman is a journalist and politician from Yemen, who became the public face of the 2011 Yemeni uprising against the Yemeni government. They were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize together with Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, President of Liberia, “for their non-violent struggle for the safety of women and for women’s rights to full participation in peace-building work.”
